Almaty International Airport (ALA) is the main international gateway to Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city and former capital, located approximately 15 km northeast of Almaty’s city center. As the busiest airport in Kazakhstan and one of the largest in Central Asia, it serves both domestic and international flights, connecting the country to major destinations across Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, and beyond, while also acting as a key hub for regional travel.

Facilities

Almaty International Airport comprises multiple terminals, including a modern main terminal for international operations and a separate domestic terminal, along with a dedicated business or VIP terminal. The airport’s facilities are designed to enhance traveler comfort and convenience. Passengers can access check‑in counters, self‑service kiosks, immigration and customs services, and baggage claim areas.

The terminals house a variety of lounges, retail outlets, and duty‑free shops, along with cafés, restaurants, and bars offering both local and international dining options. Free Wi‑Fi is available throughout the passenger areas, and additional amenities include ATMs, currency exchange counters, mother‑and‑child rooms, prayer rooms, first‑aid services, and rental car desks. VIP lounges provide separate check‑in and customs services for premium travelers.

Airlines

Almaty International Airport is served by both domestic and international carriers. Among the primary airlines operating here are Kazakhstan’s national carriers such as Air Astana, along with major international airlines including Aeroflot, Turkish Airlines, Pegasus Airlines, Lufthansa, Air Arabia, and Etihad Airways. These airlines provide connections to a wide range of destinations, including major regional hubs and intercontinental cities across Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, and East Asia.

Transportation

Travelers can reach Almaty city center from the airport by several transportation options. Official taxis and ride‑hailing services are readily available outside the terminal for direct transfers to downtown locations. Public buses, including routes such as #79, #86, #92, and #106, operate between the airport and central Almaty, with stops within walking distance of the airport entrance. Car rental services and hotel‑arranged transfers are also commonly used by visitors. The journey time to central Almaty typically ranges from around 30 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.

Almaty International Airport continues to develop its infrastructure and expand its capacity to meet rising demand. With its strategic location, extensive route network, and modern facilities, the airport remains a vital hub for both domestic mobility and international connectivity in the region.
