Athens International Airport (ATH) is the primary international gateway to Greece, located approximately 20 km east of central Athens, near the town of Spata. Officially named Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos, it is the largest and busiest airport in Greece, serving as a key hub for travel between Europe, the Middle East, and beyond. The airport handles both domestic and international flights, connecting Athens with major cities across Europe, Asia, North America, and Africa.

Facilities

The airport operates a main terminal and a satellite terminal, connected by an underground passage. The terminals manage both Schengen and non-Schengen flights with designated areas for arrivals and departures. Facilities include check-in counters, automated self-service kiosks, passport control, security screening, and baggage claim areas. Additional services include airline lounges, duty-free shops, retail outlets, and business services.

Dining options include cafés, fast-food outlets, and full-service restaurants offering Greek and international cuisine. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the airport. Additional amenities include ATMs, currency exchange counters, banking services, pharmacies, a medical center, baby care rooms, and prayer areas. Car rental services, travel agencies, and information desks are also available within the terminal.

Airlines operating at ATH include Aegean Airlines, Sky Express, Ryanair, Lufthansa, Emirates, and Qatar Airways, alongside other international carriers. These airlines provide both full-service and low-cost travel options. Key domestic destinations include Thessaloniki, Heraklion, Rhodes, and Santorini, while international routes connect to cities such as London, Paris, Frankfurt, Dubai, Doha, and New York.

Transportation

Travelers can access central Athens and surrounding areas via multiple transport options. The Athens Metro Line 3 connects the airport directly to the city center, including Syntagma Square, with a travel time of approximately 40 minutes. The Athens Suburban Railway provides additional connections to regional destinations and major rail hubs.

Taxis are available at designated ranks outside the arrivals area, with fixed fares applicable for routes between the airport and central Athens. Airport express buses operate 24 hours a day, linking the airport with key locations in the city and the port of Piraeus. Car rental and private transfer services are also available on-site.

Athens International Airport continues to maintain and upgrade its infrastructure to support increasing passenger traffic and international connectivity, reinforcing its role as a major aviation hub in southeastern Europe.
