Istanbul Airport (IST) is the primary international gateway to Türkiye’s largest city, located on the European side approximately 40 km northwest of central Istanbul. Opened in 2018, it is one of the world’s busiest airports for international passenger traffic and serves as the main hub for Turkish Airlines. The airport connects Istanbul with major cities across Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas, and the Middle East.

Facilities

Istanbul Airport features a large, modern terminal handling both domestic and international flights under one roof. Facilities include check-in counters, self-service kiosks, passport control, security screening, and advanced baggage systems. Travelers have access to multiple airline lounges, extensive duty-free shopping areas, international retail brands, and a wide variety of dining options ranging from quick-service outlets to full-service restaurants serving Turkish and global cuisine.

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal. Additional amenities include ATMs, currency exchange counters, medical services, pharmacies, prayer rooms, baby care rooms, and car rental services.

Airlines

In addition to Turkish Airlines, major carriers operating at IST include Lufthansa, British Airways, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Air France, and United Airlines. The airport offers a wide network of destinations such as London, Frankfurt, Paris, Dubai, Doha, New York, and numerous domestic cities across Türkiye.

Transportation

The airport is connected to the city via the M11 metro line, providing a direct rail link to central districts. Havaist airport shuttle buses operate frequent services to key areas including Taksim and Sultanahmet. Taxis are available 24/7 outside the arrivals area, and private transfers and car rental services are also available.

Istanbul Airport continues to expand in phases, with long-term development plans aiming to accommodate up to 200 million passengers annually. It remains a key global hub bridging Europe and Asia.
