Vasil Levski Sofia Airport (SOF), also known as Sofia Airport, is the main international gateway to Sofia and the busiest airport in Bulgaria. It is located approximately 10 km east of Sofia city center. The airport handles domestic and international flights, connecting Sofia primarily with cities across Europe and selected destinations in the Middle East.

Facilities

The airport operates two passenger terminals. Terminal 2 serves full-service and most international carriers, while Terminal 1 is used by low-cost airlines. Facilities include check-in counters, self-service kiosks, security screening, passport control, baggage claim areas, airline lounges, duty-free shops, and retail outlets.

Dining options include cafés, fast food, and restaurants serving Bulgarian and international cuisine. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminals. Additional services include ATMs, currency exchange counters, car rental services, medical assistance, and passenger information desks.

Airlines

Airlines operating at SOF include Bulgaria Air, Wizz Air, Ryanair, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, Austrian Airlines, and other European and regional carriers. These airlines operate a mix of full-service and low-cost flights. Destinations include major hubs such as Vienna, Frankfurt, Istanbul, and London, along with regional routes across Europe.

Transportation

Travelers can reach Sofia city center via metro, taxi, bus, and private transfer services. The Sofia Metro connects Terminal 2 directly to the city, with a travel time of approximately 20 minutes to central stations. Public buses operate routes between the airport and key areas of the city.

Licensed taxis and ride-hailing services are available at designated pick-up points outside the terminals. Car rental services are available on-site. Travel time to the city center is approximately 15 to 25 minutes depending on traffic conditions.

Vasil Levski Sofia Airport continues to upgrade its infrastructure to support passenger traffic and improve operational efficiency. It serves as Bulgaria’s primary aviation hub for both business and leisure travel.
